OpenAI Announces Custom Instructions for ChatGPT

It seems like a small feature, but it has huge implications. OpenAI announced that it will begin rolling out “Custom Instructions” which ChatGPT will store globally and apply to all conversations. Think of it as a “global prompt.”

Well, in fact, two prompts. The Custom Instructions settings allows you to supply a prompt that allows you to describe yourself so that it can provide better responses, and a second prompt that allows you to customize ChatGPT’s output. Each prompt can be up to 1,500 characters long.

So, for example, you could specify your profession and role to help Chat GPT tailor its responses across all conversations. And if you often ask it to repeat the same activity (“Format in Markdown” or “Act as a storyteller”), these instructions can be placed in the second prompt.

ChatGPT Plus subscribers will be the first to gain access to this feature. It is also currently unavailable in the UK and EU.
